From Scottish Tartans Authority: "Gov. Tartan No. 1. This sett is based on Logan's 'Sutherland' tartan. Various thread counts appear in Wilson's pattern books of roughly the same proportions. Documents show that this was the tartan appointed for the Highland Companies in 1725 and later for the Black Watch in 1739. Slightly different count from 42nd Regiment. Sample in STA's Scarlett Collection. Sinclair/Brown Scrapbook (started in the 1930's) provides a particularly dark sample with the notes: " . . . worn by Earl of Sutherland 1719 [Portrait] and known to have been used by the clan and by the Gordons in the early 17th century." With that in mind, it in considered a fashion tartan today and can be worn by anyone.

Sizing / Measuring
It is extremely important you follow our measuring video and order the size you need based on your measurement, not pants size. All of men's pants are labeled 2-4 inches smaller than what they actually measure. Please see our measuring video below or checkout or measuring page here.
If you measure an even size like 38 or 40, then order that exact size. If you fall in between sizes we typically recommend ordering up in size for a loose, but comfortable fit. However, each size has an extra set of snaps to go up one inch in waist size. If you prefer a snug fit then you can order down if measure an odd size (example: 37 can go up to a 38 for a loose, comfortable fit or down to a 36 for snug fit)

fit perfectly , the cost is more than reasonable and they were delivered in 4 days of placing my order. What more cans customer ask for ? If asked I will certainly recommend UT Kilts. Keep up the great work
This is my 2nd UTKILTS and and it is perfect just like my 1st kilt. Well crafted and really good pockets and looks good with a t-shirt
This is not my first one of these kilts and likely not my last! After three years of wear and dropping a lot of weight, I was looking for a replacement to my first beloved BW Utility. The new one seems to be a bit lighter weight, which was perfect for stomping around Zion National Park in 95 degree heat. Brice’s service is second to none!!
I originally ordered what turned out to be one size too big. A fast, free exchange (I had to send the old one back), and I have a kilt I will be proud to wear at festivals, etc. I have my big wool one for formal occasions, but this will really work great this Summer.
Love it! Being short I was worried about the set length, but it looks fine. Lighter than I expected also.
I liked it and it looks great on me
I am a size 36 from watching the measuring instructions, I thought I'd need a size up because In the video the instructor said he was a size 37 but he purchased a size 38. I purchased a size 38 because there is no one size up from 36 and it's too big; my own fault I guess. The order arrived from salt lake city to vancouver island in 8 days.
Thanks for the review! Yes that polyviscose is a lighter weight tartan material (remember, thicker does not mean better). As far as sizing, not really sure why you would size up when you measure a size we have in stock. I sized up for a 37 because we don't stock odd sizes. You always order the size you measure if you are an even size.
This was my first kilt (but far from my last) I've worn it twice this week and love it! I measure a 41 so I got a 42 fit perfectly at first but throughout the day it seems to stretch out a bit. Through on a nice thick leather belt and it fits just fine. Can't praise the construction of the kilt enough ( how is it only $60?).
